The Floor Deck Group has been established to promote best practice in the manufacture and installation of metal floor deck products and works closely with the Steel Construction Institute. Collaborative development programmes between member companies and the SCI over many years has resulted in a series of publications covering the design, construction and performance of metal floor deck products.
During the past 25 years composite construction using steel decking has become recognised as the principal method of constructing floors in the commercial buildings sector where it is widely accepted as probably the most economical alternative to other forms of construction. The benefits of using steel decking include speed of construction using fast track principles and the reduction in floor depth, weight and cost. Whilst recent years have seen continual use of composite construction in the commercial buildings market the use of the technology has seen new and exciting developments in the use of this construction technique in other types of building, including multi-storey car parks and residential buildings.
